Agape: The Four Loves

This is our chief aim.. love of One. Affection, friendship and romantic love are each the training ground for charity to grow. It’s also a rival to the three. We are made to love deeply and to give ourselves to Love. If we play it safe by not investing ourselves into others, we are not living out our true calling as humans.

Lewis, always sarcastically challenging, invites us to take the risk of love with my most favourite quote:

There is no safe investment. To love at all is to be vulnerable. Love anything, and your heart will certainly be wrung and possibly be broken. If you want to make sure of keeping it intact, you must give your heart to no one, not even to an animal. Wrap it carefully round with hobbies and little luxuries; avoid all entanglements; lock it up safe in the casket or coffin of your selfishness. But in that casket—safe, dark, motionless, airless—it will change. It will not be broken; it will become unbreakable, impenetrable, irredeemable.
To love at all is to be vulnerable, in all forms of love. My hope is that we will live with our hearts open to one another by LEARNING how to first love with vulnerability then to give wholly to God and others, that deep and profound love .
